Character Name: Pearl
Character Canon: Steven Universe
Character Age: Unknown, but likely over 8,000 years old given chronology.
World / History: History
Canon Point: Beginning of Season 2, after the arrival of the first Homeworld Gems on Earth.
Personality:
Pearl has embodied innumerable roles through her immense lifespan, ranging from glorified status trophy for alien conquerors to one of two rebels who stood alone in the face of an intergalactic empire, from a meek and subservient adviser to a condescending know-it-all. Each persona she adopted with the single-minded goal to follow her heroic idol, the subject of her everlasting adoration, from the very ends of the universe. If nothing else, Pearl embodies a staunch determination to a cause and relentless pursuit of an idealistic optimism. Through all her roles, the one which most aptly stuck was that of Defender of Earth, a title she has worn, albeit not always with pride, for her six thousand years on the planet. Even if she may not understand the people she protects, and even if she outright longs for escaping the atmosphere once more to wander the stars, Pearl always ends up raising her sword for the defense of Earth and its human inhabitants.
What they don't know is your real advantage. When you live for someone, you're prepared to die.
Pearl's most prominent trait is her continual undying loyalty to Rose Quartz, the gem who she held most dear and cast aside her former life on Homeworld to follow into battle. Every decision, every action, and every belief she holds stems from Rose's influence on her existence. Rose was the one who brought her to Earth, who taught her to fight, who first felt seemingly absurd sympathy for the humans of her planet, and who eventually passed away to give life to Steven, the human-gem hybrid Pearl continues to watch and protect as she did for his mother. A self-described knight, she arose from being a menial servant, more accurately an expensive living decoration of Rose's status as a Diamond, into a fully fledged fighter and follower through the training and influence of her owner. The inspiration she had gained from her Diamond led her to shed millennia of indoctrination and the heavy shackles of institutionalized servitude in order to escape her role as a Pearl, and instead become something more: a Crystal Gem.
In a more harsh view, this devout following oftentimes appears to be the only thing driving Pearl. During the wars which earned Earth its salvation from Homeworld colonization, she was infamous for throwing herself in front of far more dangerous and ruthless fighters than herself in order to prove her worth to Rose, many times requiring rescue by her liege and earning more than her fair share of humiliating losses and devastating injuries. In peacetime, she served as Rose's confidant and closest ally. Their causes were always one and the same, and Pearl's clinging to her liege brought her to distrust, tension, and even jealousy to anyone else who tried to get close to her. The uglier side of her devotion shows through especially with Rose's passing, as Pearl teeters between unhealthy grieving and aimless questioning of her purpose. Even if she still devotes herself to the core causes of her Diamond's ideologies in defense of the Earth or protection of Steven, without her liege to swear herself to, Pearl is prone to irrational outbursts, insecurity, and melancholy.
It just goes to show, always listen to me, and never listen to Amethyst.
As insecure as Pearl may be without Rose to guide her, she does manage to hide her sadness through a bombardment of character traits which range between the inconveniencing to the downright obnoxious. Primary on her irksome quirks is Pearl's insistence on being consistently right in any debate, argument, advice, or opinion. This certainly is not helped by the fact that, unfortunately, she often is actually correct. Knowledgeable in a plethora of topics, Pearl could be a wonderful dispenser of knowledge on all topics including engineering, astronomy, geology, chemistry, fencing, dancing, singing, culture, manners, and even general life advice. However, these opportunities are often squandered by her habit of scolding others or delivering her wisdom in a tone so condescending it tends to shy people away from actually listening and more towards wanting to wipe her smug smile off her face. Then, in those times when Pearl does miscalculate or miss her mark, she never takes her own learning experience well. She is easily flustered by botched plans or unexpected results, enough to urge her to double down and pile on the mistakes with uncharacteristically impulsive actions and cover-ups.
Her striving for overachieving and perfectionism are not just limited to mentality, though. Physically, Pearl aims to maintain a spotless presence, living space, and environment, even at the cost of asserting herself into cleaning others' spaces without their permission. This desire for cleanliness extends to the very extremes of vehemently avoiding any ingestion of food or beverage, as she finds the very process of digestion disgusting. She greatly enjoys organizing and cleaning, very willingly taking any and all maintenance tasks whether they be as simple as folding laundry or fixing up a beaten down motor. This makes her a reliably handy person to have on hand, given that one can forgive her fussing over their own slip-ups or personal hygiene.
Outside of working and menial chores, Pearl's interests revolve heavily around what many would consider to be 'cultured' or 'refined' pastimes. She enjoys keeping up to practice with sword-fighting, opting for a smooth and dance-like style of combat as opposed to her colleagues' more straightforward forms. Dancing poses and flexible stretches permeate even into her casual actions, and she can often be caught striking dramatically graceful poses even when she probably shouldn't be. This is, of course, fitting, as drama appears to be a distinct enjoyment for hers. While she likes to scoff at immaturity, jokes, or lies, even Pearl can slip into enjoying a playful role given the proper cue. This doesn't make her convincing, though, as she is quite prone to hamming up her role, overacting, and getting far too caught up in flowery narrative purple prose to ever seem natural.
Oh, don't be dramatic. I saw humans get on fine without power for millennia. You used to hunt and gather. What happened to that?
Despite her apparent interest in high culture and manners, Pearl has one fatal weakness to her role as Earth's defender: She has no idea about anything regarding human culture, behavior, or norms. The most common turns of phrase will go soaring over her head, jokes will fall completely flat or, at best, take her a few seconds to understand. This disconnect goes far beyond simple language barriers, as even shows of human emotion are oftentimes lost to her. She doesn't seem to get when there are inappropriate times to talk, sometimes butting into conversations which are far more deep or heavy than her input makes them. Even human shows of sorrow or despair are hit or miss with her. She obviously cares deeply for humans, but issues which extend beyond the drama of life and death are distinctly less vital on her radar. If a human was in mortal danger, Pearl would be among the first to jump in. If a human was experiencing a more complicated problem, such as property loss or other difficulty in life, she would simply not understand and often rudely dismiss the issue as unimportant. This makes her title a somewhat humorous contrast between relentless planet saving and casual disregard of lesser safety concerns.
Opposed to all these oddities and negatives, Pearl is nowhere near a terrible gem. When someone needs help, she can prove to be the most caring, sentimental aid available. While she may act wrongfully in a misguided view for the good of others, she is always quick to apologize and make up for her transgressions. One of her most important character traits is her ability to learn and grow, to eventually overcome the unpleasantness of her upbringing and background in order to become a more appropriate voice of reason and understanding. Her desire to help humans is not all a fabrication of Rose Quartz. Even if she doesn't truly realize it herself, Pearl feels a strong compassion for the planet she fought for, and that compassion comes from her distinct capacity to care and love those she was sworn to protect. Like Rose before her, Pearl remains an invaluable ally to humankind, and will always be at the ready to save the day.
Integration Questions
how will your character handle being assigned a leadership role:
On first appearance, Pearl would be undoubtedly eager to leap into action. Being in a role of leadership means long overdue respect, as well as getting to implement her repertoire of knowledge in the pursuit of a goal. She could even be a little foolhardy, getting caught up in her overconfidence and smarty-pants attitude which could potentially lead to major oversteps and disaster.
However, even she wouldn't be comfortable for long in the position. Pearl thrives best in a middling area of authority, high enough to be listened to and taken seriously, but low enough to follow someone's words and follow a cause. A knight at heart, Pearl being in charge, especially independently so, would lead to major insecurity. How can she know if she is doing right if there is no leader to tell her? Worse yet, any other leaders would cause Pearl to continually evaluate herself against them in entirely negative lights. She would fail spectacularly, but slowly, without someone to support her in the role.
how will your character handle being assigned an antagonist role:
An antagonist role would go against everything Pearl has asserted herself to. Given the severity, this could either manifest as a queasy feeling or outright self-hatred. She has been able to play bit villainy before, and could honestly have fun given the deeds were harmless enough and the acting fun. But the moment her actions lead to harm or destruction, she would quickly break apart.
In the most extreme of cases, where the antagonism rides directly opposite of Rose's goals of protecting humans or Earth itself, Pearl would likely be unable to do it at all. She has defied her birth-given role before, and she would likely chance it again should the need arise, no matter the consequence.
how will your character handle the implication that they’re not real / are a clone:
Technology had advanced on Homeworld to the point that Pearl would easily understand the concept of artificial life. She would likely even be quite blasé about the fact she was not real. Gems physical forms are already illusions, and the lofty concepts of life and mortality are generally lost on their kind.
This isn't to mean she would not panic, though. Pearl always has the capacity to panic about anything (mostly about getting back home). But once she settles in, there won't be much existential lingering or dread on her status of living or not. Given that gems are manufactured entities, she would see her life as a clone no more or less legitimate.
Powers
Powers / Enhancements:
Gem Abilities:
★ Non-physical, regenerating form & Shapeshifting - Gem bodies are illusions of hard light, meaning that any and all damage on their bodies doesn't affect their actual being. Provided their gemstone is unharmed, they can quickly retreat into their stone and regenerate after some time. This illusory form also means all gems have the ability to alter their appearance at will, changing shape into anything they want provided they are capable of maintaining the shape.
★ Summoned Weapon (Spear) - Pearl can summon spears from the gem in her forehead, usable either for throwing or wielding directly.
★ Projection - Pearl is able to use light from her gemstone to illuminate dark spaces like a spotlight. She can also manipulate this light to show monochromatic blue-and-white images into the physical world as holograms. She can create diagrams for use as visual aids in conversation, or even project independent holograms to act as body doubles or training partners by severing the projected light. However, this can also backfire and project embarrassing thoughts inadvertently should she be flustered or not careful with her projections.
★ Storage - Her gem also serves as a permeable surface which she can store personal belongings within like a physics-defying hammerspace.
★ Increased strength and agility - Gems have superhuman physicalities, allowing Pearl, even at her scrawny physique, to stop punches with an extended palm, endure massive amounts of damage, or leap incredible distances with ease.
★ Fusion - Pearl can fuse with another gem to create a larger, more powerful gem embodying their combined abilities, strengths, and personalities.
★ Bubbling - The Crystal Gems have the ability to encase valuable objects or gems inside of protective bubbles, keeping them in stasis for safe storage and retrieval at a later time.
★ Gravity Shifting - Gems also have the ability to adjust to any change in gravity, able to walk on the surface of any planet as if it possessed a natural gravity level.
Skills and Strengths:
★ Swordfighting Expertise - Pearl trained extensively under Rose to learn how to wield and fight with a sword, and can arguably hold her own in a sword duel just as well as she can with her natural weapon, the spear.
★ Engineering and Aerodynamic Knowledge - She also seems to be a skilled engineer, able to tinker and improve machinery from both Homeworld and Earth when provided with the right material. She seems to be specifically skilled with transportation vehicles, namely cars and spaceships.
★ Encyclopedic knowledge of many topics - Well-studied, Pearl knows many topics ranging from culture and manners to combat and tactics to science and history.
Nerf Details:
These are very up to negotiation and discussion, but I would imagine her specific gem-body relationship would uphold, where she would be not die permanently without her gem being damaged or shattered (Totally up for changing this, if needed!). However, her projected form would be much more susceptible to weakness and damage than usual. Her strength would be reduced to more fitting for her appearances (aka, not very much at all), and she would experience more human-like damage to her form such as bleeding, broken limbs, or other forms of harm.
Her gem would likely be the target of most of the nerfs, acting incredibly weakened. She would no longer be able to summon weapons at will, and would instead have to find a weapon to keep inside of her gem beforehand. The space she has to store would also be massively reduced, no more than a person could normally fit in a bag, and weight would factor in on her as well. Projections would still work, albeit flickering and unreliable at best, plain nonfunctional at worst. Hologram body-doubles would be short-lived if they ever worked, and near uncontrollable once disconnected from her gem. She would not be able to shapeshift or retreat into her gem when damaged, and will instead have to wait out a far slower regeneration process if heavily damaged, which still is more effective than humans but far less rapid, and only becomes more time-costly the more severe her injuries are.
She is still an agile and adept swordfighter, but her ability to leap across entire buildings would be reduced to human levels of jumps and rolls.
I would also assume she could still survive without eating or drinking, if for no other reason than she would never do so willingly if she had to. She could be required to sleep and rest, though, in order to bring her closer to human limitations, if need be!
